The response to IP Insider has been fantastic. Launched 18 months ago the blog receives an average of over 1,400 visits per month, and the subscriber list keeps growing.

We’ve listened to our readers and have learned what they want: Concise news and clear perspective of IP developments and trends. Not just the news, but the interpretation of “close up” view of it. This is what IP CloseUp will deliver.

 

Better Access & Navigation

The new format will be easier to read and it will make accessing links for useful background sources simpler. Providing comments will be easier, too. (We like comments.)

We are going to feature more material in Guest Columns. Guest posts can be short 500 word commentaries or full-blown articles. The index of more than 55 posts that appeared previously on IP Insider in 2010 and 2011, many still timely, will all be available and searchable on IP CloseUp.

Look for IP CloseUp at ipcloseup.com on the Web or @ipcloseup on Twitter.

I have added SiNApSE, a popular and very active intellectual property blog in India, to my Blogroll. This blog is the "brainchild" of Brain League, an Intellectual Property services company providing end to end services in various countries. The company was founded by graduates from IIT, Madras, IIM, Bangalore, National Law School of India University, Bangalore and Franklin Pierce Law Center, USA. Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of David Kappos

Gene Quinn, President & Founder of IPWatchdog, posted on July 29, 2010 the first of a three part series.  An excerpt from the post:

On July 19, 2010, I was granted a back stage pass of sorts, for a behind-the-scenes look at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. I had initially requested an interview with Director David Kappos and was given an affirmative response, but then I floated the idea of a three-part series to commemorate the first anniversary of David Kappos leaving the private sector to take the helm at the USPTO. Kappos was confirmed by the United States Senate on August 7, 2009, and formally sworn in by Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on August 13, 2009.

IP Wire

Yesterday I heard from Tom Hochstatter, IP Wire's Managing Editor, that their site (launched in March 2010) is "intend[ed] to be the 'VentureWire' and/or 'TechCrunch' for IP deals and transactions.  The following description is from the About section of their site:

IP Wire is the only newsletter dedicated solely on IP Deals, IP Tech Transfer, and IP Commercialization transactions.

We aspire to be the most comprehensive destination for Intellectual Property Deals and Transactions.  Building a community of IP professionals to assist us is critical.  We would appreciate it if you would send your latest deal news to us for publication.

IP Wire is the publishing division of Fluid Innovation in Austin, Texas.  Fluid Innovation has been in business since 2005 and was started by two senior IP Licensing Executives that worked for a F500 telecommunications firm.  Fluid provides complex deal flow management software and expert consulting to maximize and expedite a firm’s IP deals.

On the Record Interview with CAFC Judge Randall Rader

The following is excerpted from Gene Quinn's (patent attorney & IPWatchdog founder) April 12, 2010 post:

On April 2, 2010, I had the privilege of conducting an on the record Interview with Judge Randall Rader, the soon to be Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Some weeks earlier I wrote to Judge Rader requesting the opportunity to conduct an interview. I explained that leading up to his becoming Chief Judge of the Federal Circuit there would likely be increased interest in the Federal Circuit and in him in particular. In my letter I explained I would not ask about specific issues or cases, and that my objective was to discuss his experiences on the Federal Circuit, how cases are handled and what, if any, preparations are underway for him to become Chief Judge. Judge Rader granted my request, and what appears below is a transcript of my conversation with him.

Copyright, trademark, and patent law come with their own languages, and reading about them can leave you more confused than when you started.  As you can see from the sidebar, there is no shortage of (largely excellent) blogs devoted to the expanding and evolving world of intellectual property (“IP”) law.  Yet by and large they are written by lawyers for lawyers.  Our goal at Eyes on IP is to provide brief, clear explanations of what’s going on in the world of IP litigation, and, more importantly, how it affects you, the business reader.  If we meet that goal, you’ll know what’s going on without having to speak (or think) like a lawyer.
